Self confidence is the difference between feeling unstoppable and feeling scared out of your wits. Your perception of yourself has an enormous impact on how others perceive you. Perception is reality — the more self confidence you have, the more likely it is you’ll succeed.

Although many of the factors affecting self confidence are beyond your control, there are a number of things you can consciously do to build self confidence. By using these 10 strategies you can get the mental edge you need to reach your potential.

Build Self Confidence

1. Dress Sharp

Although clothes don’t make the man, they certainly affect the way he feels about himself. No one is more conscious of your physical appearance than you are. When you don’t look good, it changes the way you carry yourself and interact with other people. Use this to your advantage by taking care of your personal appearance. In most cases, significant improvements can be made by bathing and shaving frequently, wearing clean clothes, and being cognizant of the latest styles.

This doesn’t mean you need to spend a lot on clothes. One great rule to follow is “spend twice as much, buy half as much”. Rather than buying a bunch of cheap clothes, buy half as many select, high quality items. In long run this decreases spending because expensive clothes wear out less easily and stay in style longer than cheap clothes. Buying less also helps reduce the clutter in your closet.

2. Walk Faster

One of the easiest ways to tell how a person feels about herself is to examine her walk. Is it slow? tired? painful? Or is it energetic and purposeful? People with confidence walk quickly. They have places to go, people to see, and important work to do. Even if you aren’t in a hurry, you can increase your self confidence by putting some pep in your step. Walking 25% faster will make to you look and feel more important.

3. Good Posture

Similarly, the way a person carries herself tells a story. People with slumped shoulders and lethargic movements display a lack of self confidence. They aren’t enthusiastic about what they’re doing and they don’t consider themselves important. By practicing good posture, you’ll automatically feel more confident. Stand up straight, keep your head up, and make eye contact. You’ll make a positive impression on others and instantly feel more alert and empowered.

4. Personal Commercial

One of the best ways to build confidence is listening to a motivational speech. Unfortunately, opportunities to listen to a great speaker are few and far between. You can fill this need by creating a personal commercial. Write a 30-60 second speech that highlights your strengths and goals. Then recite it in front of the mirror aloud (or inside your head if you prefer) whenever you need a confidence boost.

5. Gratitude

When you focus too much on what you want, the mind creates reasons why you can’t have it. This leads you to dwell on your weaknesses. The best way to avoid this is consciously focusing on gratitude. Set aside time each day to mentally list everything you have to be grateful for. Recall your past successes, unique skills, loving relationships, and positive momentum. You’ll be amazed how much you have going for you and motivated to take that next step towards success.

6. Compliment other people

When we think negatively about ourselves, we often project that feeling on to others in the form of insults and gossip. To break this cycle of negativity, get in the habit of praising other people. Refuse to engage in backstabbing gossip and make an effort to compliment those around you. In the process, you’ll become well liked and build self confidence. By looking for the best in others, you indirectly bring out the best in yourself.

7. Sit in the front row

In schools, offices, and public assemblies around the world, people constantly strive to sit at the back of the room. Most people prefer the back because they’re afraid of being noticed. This reflects a lack of self confidence. By deciding to sit in the front row, you can get over this irrational fear and build your self confidence. You’ll also be more visible to the important people talking from the front of the room.

8. Speak up

During group discussions many people never speak up because they’re afraid that people will judge them for saying something stupid. This fear isn’t really justified. Generally, people are much more accepting than we imagine. In fact most people are dealing with the exact same fears. By making an effort to speak up at least once in every group discussion, you’ll become a better public speaker, more confident in your own thoughts, and recognized as a leader by your peers.

9. Work out

Along the same lines as personal appearance, physical fitness has a huge effect on self confidence. If you’re out of shape, you’ll feel insecure, unattractive, and less energetic. By working out, you improve your physcial appearance, energize yourself, and accomplish something positive. Having the discipline to work out not only makes you feel better, it creates positive momentum that you can build on the rest of the day.

10. Focus on contribution

Too often we get caught up in our own desires. We focus too much on ourselves and not enough on the needs of other people. If you stop thinking about yourself and concentrate on the contribution you’re making to the rest of the world, you won’t worry as much about you own flaws. This will increase self confidence and allow you to contribute with maximum efficiency. The more you contribute to the world the more you’ll be rewarded with personal success and recognition.

It is said that the human mind operates in two levels: the conscious and subconscious level. We all are familiar with the conscious level of our mind, it’s the one we use to think, analyze and make decisions everyday. It’s also called the left-brain, majority of our life experiences go through this level. The subconscious level of our mind is believed to receive and record everything we say and think consciously but has been forgotten. It’s the one that shapes our behaviors and personality.

We use our conscious mind to choose and make distinction; success or failure, good or bad, fight or flight, poor or rich, healthy or unhealthy, and so on. However, our subconscious mind doesn’t know how to make such distinction, whatever you decide to think about or dwell on will go into your subconscious mind.

So, whatever you think and act consciously day in and day out will be fed into your subconscious mind and it slowly develops into a personality. That’s how your behaviours and personality are formed over the years. If you always feed thoughts of success into your subconscious mind, it will only know how to think success. On the other hand, if you feed thoughts of failure to your subconscious, it will only know how to think failure.

That’s why you are always advised to think positively because what you decide to think about will leave an impression on your mind that will effect everything you do day in and day out; month in and month out; year in and year out.

You see it’s very easy to teach and develop the power of your subconscious mind; if you want to achieve success, you must always feed positive messages or affirmations to your subconscious. And if you’ve done that long enough, your subconscious mind will know how to guide and direct your thoughts and actions toward achieving success.

On the other hand, it’s also easy to teach your subconscious mind to do otherwise. If you’re always complaining how hard your life is; looking for excuses to blame other people why you’re not successful; then your subconscious mind will direct you to think and do the things the losers do.

Are you beginning to see the power of your subconscious mind?

You are the master of your own thinking, you can control your attitude, actions, productivity, and results. The choice is really yours to think what you think and act responsibly. It may take some effort to train yourself to think in a positive way, but if you think that it’s wort it then I believe you can do it. And that will eventually translate into your subconscious mind and make you a better person.

Perhaps many of your friends will joke and laugh at you when you start talking about positive thinking and subconscious mind, BUT I can guarantee you that you will become more effective and more successful person if you just ignore those friends and follow the advice to develop your subconscious and positive mindset. It works; believe it.

It’s the same as taking care of your health, you know that in order to have a healthy body, you need to put in healthy food or eat healthy diet. Similarly, if you want to have healthy mind, you need to put in healthy thoughts in your mind.

Sometimes ago I was listening to a self-improvement tape by Jim Rohn. He said that everything starts from our minds; he then continued to say: “What we think determines what we believe; what we believe influences what we choose; what we choose defines what we are; and what we are attracts what we have.” That remarks strongly registered in my mind and I never forget them.

Positive thinking is a very powerful personal tool and we all have it; some people choose to use it but others choose to ignore it. If you have ever met someone who always look at the bright side of life, you know that he or she is using this powerful tool. On the other hand, I’m sure you’ve also met someone who always complain about life. Which one are you more attracted to?

Our minds control all of our thought processes, our attitudes and actions; it determines whether one chooses to live a positive and happy life or live life with a doom and gloom attitude. Problems and challenges always occur in our life; we can either run and hide from them or learn to respond to them in positive ways. See if you respond to challenges positively; you’ll get positive results. Similarly, if you respond to problems negatively; you’ll get negative results.

Here are some tips to help you improve your mindset and your life as well.

* If you are faced with a negative thought, change it to a positive one. Remember it’s your response that counts! Most people feel the sting of rising gas prices and cost of living. How do you choose to respond? Do you respond by complaining and blaming? Or do you choose to respond by evaluating the options you have? Can I cut down some of my expenses to soothe the sting of rising cost? Is there option for me to earn extra incomes? Many good options exist if you choose to spend some time and effort looking.

* Surround yourself with positive people; stay away from negative people. Go to events or talk to people that can help you learn how to respond to challenges positively. This is a life skill everyone can learn if they want to.

* There is a saying, “It’s the simple things in life that make me happy.” Find those simple pleasures, no matter how small or insignificant they may be as long as they can help you to stay positive.

* Nurture the inner you; love instead of blaming yourself. Be kind and respectful to others; greet the doorman in the morning; give a hug to someone who needs it most. When you send out positive signals; you affect people around positively and attract positive people as well.

* Help someone less fortunate than yourself. Volunteer your time at a nursing home or hospital. When you give, you receive ten-fold.

Remember, your actions will affect other people. If you are positive, you will be surrounded by positive people who wish to be in your company. However, if you are negative, people will shy away from you and only those negative people will come to you.

To sum up: Positive thinking breeds positive results period.

Perhaps you have heard somebody said this before… “Attitude is everything.” It’s quite true indeed. Positive attitude is everything. It gives you many benefits in life. It makes you feel more happy, have more positive energy and attract more positive people in your life.

Positive attitude also allows you to put thing in a better perspective. For example, when you’re faced with problem, you will tend to look for a solution instead of trying to find faults and blame others. It can also give you a better health as positive energy will lower your stress level.

Here are 5 tips on how to develop a positive attitude…

1. Mind over Matter. There can be many definitions for this term. In this article, I would like to use it to describe “awareness” or “consciousness”. I mean being fully aware of your mind patterns. Our mind patterns were developed since childhood. And most of the time, we are controlled by our minds. Therefore, our attitudes are also controlled by our minds.

If you want to develop a positive attitude, start by becoming more aware of your mind patterns. Be an observer of your mind. When you become an observer, you’re in control and you’ll be able to notice what your mind says (both positive and negative). Therefore, when you notice your mind saying something negative, you can intercept it and replace it with positive thought.

2. Live Life NOW! Learn to live fully in your present moment. Don’t cling on your past or wish you could have this or that. Appreciate what you already have NOW. Express gratitude for everything you have now. HERE and NOW are your life! Once you have accepted that, you can become more positive and appreciative of life. You will do and live your best in your present moment. Only then, you can move forward in life with positive attitude.

3. Associate more with positive people. I’m sure you have heard this saying: “Birds of the same feather flock together.” If you flock together with negative people, you will become negative. On the other hand, if you associate yourself with more positive people, they can also influence your characters and attitude. You will become more positive as well.

4. Learn to give compliment to others. You don’t need to do this excessively. Just do it in a natural way by focusing on the positive side of other people. A few kind words spoken to another person can really make his or her day. Doing so will make you more likable as well.

5. SMILE and say THANK YOU more. Wherever you are and whatever you do, look for opportunity to offer sincere appreciation to your friends, family members, peers, team members, bosses or any other people you interact with everyday. Smiling and saying thank you more often not only can make you feel good but also cause those around you to become more positive.

Develop your positive attitude daily and make it become second nature to you. This will give you more happiness in life.
